“Blowing the Shakti”

Dear Durga,

Thank you for your question. There is nothing that I know of to read about the term “blowing the shakti.” I was taught this concept and negative practice over thirty years ago by my gurus and teachers in India. So I will answer your question by sharing with you what I have learned about this and how The Wellness work has come to be my own best teacher and friend. Shakti is a Sanskrit word meaning sacred force or empowerment. Shakti is the concept, or personification, of divine feminine creative power, the primordial cosmic energy that moves through the entire universe. When human beings encounter the shakti energy directly, it can be overwhelming; they may have difficulty containing such a forceful experience. People may become anxious, and sometimes unconsciously do something to dissipate that energy to reduce their anxiety: “blow the shakti.”

During our chanting, meditations, or a powerful spiritual weekend at Wellness, much of the negative energy that our egos carry around is released. By negative energy, I’m referring to the judgments, fears, anger, resentments, comparisons of ourselves with others, and all the rest that our shadows may do to persecute or sabotage us.

When we come to Wellness for a four-day release of those energies that get stuck in our aura (energy field) as well as in our bodies, mind and spirit, we are cleansing ourselves and all of our energetic fields.  As we do the personal work, we are releasing the fears, pain, anger and judgments that hold us down like big weights. This work opens up and frees the lower/ foundational chakras (1st to 3rd) which, in turn, allows the spiritual energy, i.e., kundalini, to flow upwards to open up the spiritual gates of enlightenment.

Then when we chant, meditate, pray and do breathwork, we are continuing to cleanse all of the higher chakras from the heartcenter to the crown chakra and above. This refines and purifies the energetic field around us. The foundational chakras, first through third, are like the launching pad of a rocketship. We do all the preparational work there, cleaning out and preparing to launch the kundalini rocketship within us. “Prepare for launching” might be something you could say to remind yourself that the Heart-Centered therapies are preparation for the higher chakra take off.

I often hear people saying that they can’t seem to keep the wonderful spiritual experiences and heart-centered love when they return home to the other parts of their lives. So then we need to ask ourselves, how am I “blowing the shakti”?

This amazing feeling of oneness with other members of our group, with God and with all of humankind can be dissolved in an instant by opening up energy leaks that we have just repaired. This is “blowing the shakti.” So how do we do that when we leave Wellness? It can be done by going back to unhealthy habits such as drinking alcohol, smoking pot, numbing ourselves with food and other numbing substances. We can also bring ourselves down by yelling at the kids, our spouses or our co-workers.  As we move up to higher levels in Wellness work (PTI training and the Mentor level), we begin to see clearly our shadow parts and how they can sabotage us. Those parts of ourselves don’t believe we deserve to connect with God or our own spiritual essence, pull us unconsciously into “blowing the shakti” by reverting to previously unhealthy behaviors, thoughts and judgments.

People also report that the more they stay with the Heart-Centered work, the longer they can maintain the levels of purification they are receiving. Refraining from the unhealthy behaviors is vital. A very important principle is don’t go back to sleep! This is best achieved by choosing conscious behaviors and remaining highly aware of your states of mind. I often hear the affirmation, WAKE UP AND STAY AWAKE!” You can use this whenever you think of it.

A daily spiritual practice before you head off to work is essential. It could be yoga, chanting or singing to God in your own way, meditation, reading your “bible” (whatever that is for you), taking a walk or jogging in Nature or on the beach and/or doing some personal writing about your process to remain conscious. These are all measures to maintain your highest levels of consciousness and to retain the shakti within you.

Thank you dear student for the great question.

 Love, Diane

  1. Beautiful reply, Diane. I’ve also found that one of the best ways to stay connected is through daily practice of gratitude, which always leads me to daily practice of awe. So let me start my gratitude practice for today by telling you how inexpressibly grateful I am for YOU! Much much love,
    Kali-B

    • Dear Kali,
It was so wonderful to see you here at Wellness since you have moved to that beautiful Island you now live on. I appreciate your gratitude process and including me and Wellness in your process. That really opened my heart to read.
One of our students, Dr. Robin Kirby has a gratidude book that she has developed to enhance our daily gratiude practices.
Perhaps she can share it here on my blog.
      lots of love,
      ma
